Coronado Quarantine, Day 55 – A Chronicle of the Unfolding Situation

Long time no blog! During this quarantine, I’ve decided to get back into journaling and blogging with a personal touch, keeping us both entertained. You might feel like you’ve missed a lot—maybe even a whole season! I’ll try to catch up as we go. In the meantime, stay safe and wash your hands.

Day 54 is here. We’ve been in lockdown for nearly two months here in California, a state notorious for its high living costs, especially rent. With so many people out of work for this long, I expected a scene right out of the Great Depression—people desperate for jobs, turning to extreme measures like dumpster diving and biking to work.

Boy, was I wrong. People are ordering takeout like never before, crowding the beaches, and filling up RV parks to capacity. It seems like folks are coming from far and wide because every RV park I checked for a potential backup plan is booked solid for next month.

I’ve been trying to get a contractor to install a mini-split AC unit in our RV for weeks now. There’s this website where you can see the job cost, prepay, and then they send someone over—a bit like TaskRabbit. But every “pro” kept canceling, rescheduling, or showing up only to not do the job. I assumed people would be scrambling for gigs, but it turns out home improvement is in high demand since it’s one of the few things people can do from home.

I’m now waiting for the fifth contractor and not really holding my breath. This whole situation makes no sense. We’re printing money like it’s going out of style, millions are unemployed, yet there’s no market crash, no massive devaluation of the currency. It’s like a giant summer camp for everyone until work resumes.

I know some families are struggling because they don’t have savings and can’t claim unemployment, but that’s not what I see around here. My husband has been saving up in case real estate prices drop to look at rental properties, but it seems like the bubble isn’t bursting anytime soon.

Oh well, if I can’t find someone to install my AC, we might just tackle it ourselves over the long weekend.
