Paris ranks as one of the priciest cities in both Europe and the world. Whenever I return from more affordable destinations, I’m always shocked by the high costs here. Finding affordable yet fun date ideas can feel like an impossible challenge!
Dating in Paris is often far from budget-friendly. People here are usually stressed, have high-paying jobs, and want to make the most of their limited free time. It’s not uncommon to get off work around 9:30 PM. The typical date night might start with $12 drinks—two or three to unwind—followed by a $50 meal, then another bar or club for $15 cocktails. Add in a cab ride home, and the evening could easily total $120 or more per person!
While I occasionally splurge like this with close friends, I usually prefer having dinner at someone’s home or a picnic in the park during summer. Regularly spending $120 on dates three times a week is simply out of my budget.
For tourists, Paris offers many budget-friendly romantic spots. A picnic at the base of the Eiffel Tower or on top of Montmartre with a panoramic view of the city is a classic. But if you live in Paris, these activities might only appeal once a year at most.
Here are my frugal date ideas:
LESSER-KNOWN PARKS
Forget the crowded tourist spots. For a beautiful view of Eastern Paris, head to Parc de Belleville. I also like Buttes-Chaumont and Parc André Citroën, which has a modern vibe by the river. Pack a good bottle of wine, some cheese, and a baguette, and you’re all set!
MOVIES UNDER THE STARS
In the summer, La Villette screens movies on a giant outdoor screen. People gather with blankets or folding chairs, making it a super romantic setting. The movie selection is great, and the best part is that the screenings are free. If you don’t have a chair, you can rent one there.
CYCLING TOUR OF THE CITY
I love cycling and Paris, so why not combine the two? If you don’t own a bike, you can rent one from the numerous Velib stations for just 1 euro a day. You can use these bikes for 30-minute segments and drop them off at any other station. Cycling tours often conclude with a coffee or a drink somewhere cozy.
FREE MUSEUMS AND CONCERTS
I frequently check the schedules of music schools or local events for free concerts. One of my favorite events is the Fête de la Musique on June 21st, when there are free concerts throughout the city by both famous artists and local garage bands.
Many museums are also free, such as the Modern Art Museum, the house of Victor Hugo, and the Musée Carnavalet. Other major museums, like the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay, offer free admission on the first Sunday of each month. Since I don’t like spending hours in a museum, these short, free visits are perfect for me.
These date ideas are excellent for first outings. Over time, I typically switch to having dinners at home or meeting up with friends. Besides the food you bring, these activities are free, and the flexibility means you can leave whenever you want!
