Have You Pictured Your Dream Life? Is It Different Now?
This post is part of a series called the 30 Steps Program to Financial Independence.
As you’ve been contemplating financial independence for a while, considering things like bartering, saving, and simple living, take a moment to think about your dream life. Has your ideal picture changed from a few weeks ago or even last year?
For me, my dream life is always evolving. But one thing is clear: I don’t want what Hollywood and slick marketing tried to sell me 5 or 10 years ago. I don’t want the massive mansion—it’s too big, too flashy, and too expensive. I don’t want a sports car or an Olympic pool.
What I desire is a simple life.
I don’t need a lot of things. I want to be able to travel occasionally without worrying about all the stuff I’ve accumulated back home. I want to invite friends over to share experiences, not to flaunt a mansion.
I want to be proud of my life.
For me, that means living a life filled with joy and self-improvement, one that’s manageable yet meaningful. I enjoy interacting with people, but I don’t need a $200 dinner to do so. I have a few possessions that I value because they make my life easier. I don’t need newer versions and hope they last a long time.
This is my dream life.
And it’s much different than before. If you’re on the path to financial independence, think about what your dreams were and what they are today. There’s nothing wrong with dreaming big. You might want the six-figure job, working 80 hours a week, and the fancy car. I prefer freedom and free time to follow my dreams. There’s no right or wrong, just putting in the extra effort to achieve your own goals.
